As you would imagine, the wonderfully thick double coat of a Chow Chow requires expert attention to keep it healthy and striking.

Because the Chow Chow sheds, you will need a routine to keep the excess hair at bay and a way to vacuum the copious hair that might have escaped your attention.

The American Kennel Club estimates that you will probably need to allocate a couple of hours each week to keep the Chow Chow coat in check. And this time could well be taken up with the task of brushing alone.

And of course like all dogs, the nails need to be clipped on a regular basis. Needless to say, the other routine tasks should be slotted into your routine as well; tasks such as checking ears for wax and cleaning teeth as best you can.

The Chow Chow Coat – FAQs

Questions commonly asked by prospective Chow Chow owners include the following:

How would you best describe the Chow Chow’s coat?

This is a double coated  breed that has a relatively long and very thick coat.
There are 2 categories of Chow Chow coat:
1. The smooth coat – the outer coat tends to be smoother, as the name suggests, as well as more dense.
2. The rough coat – very thick and lots of it. Here you have an undercoat as well.

How often should I groom my Chow Chow?

To do an adequate job with grooming your Chow Chow, you would need to allow time for a weekly grooming routine.

 Do Chow Chow smell?

Do Chow Chow shed?

Yes they do shed but not necessarily every day. You can expect a seasonal shedding but exactly how much will depend on how often you brush your pet.
